GIGA.GREEN Powers Germany's Most Sustainable Rest Stop

At GIGA.GREEN, our commitment to the energy transition is well-known. Or perhaps we should say: We "shine" for the energy transition? After all, renewable energies play a crucial role in achieving climate goals. For us, it means: Time to shine!

Renewable Energies in Focus

What exactly are renewable energies? These are regenerative energy sources that are practically inexhaustible for sustainable energy supply or can be renewed relatively quickly. In addition to hydropower, marine energy, and wind energy, solar energy is particularly on the rise. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 10.9 percent of the electricity generated in Germany in 2022 was produced by photovoltaics.

The use of photovoltaic systems is gaining importance every year. While there is an overall continuous increase in the use of the regenerative energy source sun, we see significant potential for growth here. We are excited about every project we initiate or get involved in. Especially ambitious construction projects like ARC Evendorf are not only a challenge but also bring the energy transition closer to a shared goal and bring us closer to our personal goal of saving a gigaton of CO₂ with our customers.

The Construction Project in Evendorf

We are particularly pleased to introduce the construction project in Evendorf as it combines solar energy and e-mobility with the associated charging infrastructure. The most sustainable rest stop in Germany is currently being built on the A7 – and GIGA.GREEN is part of it. Along the highway, we are installing a ground-mounted photovoltaic system with a capacity of 1.5 MWp, equivalent to the capacity of around 2,700 private solar roofs. This system will generate 1.25 million kWh of affordable and sustainable electricity annually, covering a significant portion of the Auto Reise Center's consumption. The project will be completed in 2023.

Project Facts

The future rest stop, including shopping opportunities, a hotel, and restaurants, is set to open in spring 2023. Approximately 20 million euros are being invested to implement the innovative – and according to the project developers, unique in Germany – construction project on around 15 hectares. Not only does the futuristic design indicate that something special is being created at the A7 Evendorf exit, but the centerpiece of the sustainable concept of the Auto Reise Center is a groundbreaking multi-energy station that will provide both conventional fuels and electricity.

GIGA.GREEN's Contribution

On around 14,800 square meters along the highway, we are installing solar panels to supply the energy station with green electricity. Additionally, an exclusive e-charging point with a lounge will complement the offer. The goal is to create around 150 parking spaces for trucks at the rest stop. Of the approximately 120 car parking spaces, 20 will be equipped with a charging station. A total of 40 charging stations are planned, which will be powered by solar energy. Thanks to GIGA.GREEN and this exciting project, the Lüneburg Heath will become a bit greener.
